Nancy Spero took no prisoners:
“The artist recalled these haunted beings as revelations: ‘In the early 1960s, I have these strange creatures, saying ‘merde’ and ‘fuck you.’ They’re very angry images; they’re screaming and their tongues are sticking out. I think the anger came from a feeling that I didn’t have a voice. I didn’t have an arena in which to conduct a dialogue. I felt like a non-person, an artist without a voice.’”
